About the episode:
On this special episode, Harlan sits down with student reporter of the Daily Tarheel, Alice Scott. Alice shares more information about her experience following the story of UNC's confirmed use of AI technology in the admissions process. This story opens up discussion for a lot of interesting questions as similar systems are implemented at other schools. How are applications assessed by this technology? How was this model trained? Is there a double standard here when it comes to students using AI for classes? As AI becomes more and more integrated into our lives in meaningful ways, it will continue to raise important questions for discussion.

About Kass & Mike:
Kass and Mike Lazerow are serial entrepreneurs and investors best known as the cofounders of Golf.com and Buddy Media, the leading social media marketing platform that sold to Salesforce for $745 million. With a lifetime of stories from decades of building businesses and helping others as investors and advisors, they are in high demand as public speakers, writers, and podcast guests.
Their journey began as friends growing up in the suburbs of the nation’s capital. They started dating after reuniting at a mutual friend’s wedding in 1996. Two years later, they did what all new couples deeply in love do - cofounded a company, Golf.com, before marrying in 1999. After selling Golf.com to Time Warner in 2006, Mike and Kass cofounded Buddy Media. And since selling Buddy Media to Salesforce in 2012, they have focused on providing capital and advice to the world’s most innovative founders.
Mike and Kass have supported close to 100 early-stage startup founders. They served as angel investors and advisors to Scopely, which sold to Savvy Games for $5 billion in 2022, and Liquid Death, the canned water company whose “evil mission” is to make people laugh and get more of them to drink healthy beverages more often, all while helping to kill plastic pollution.
Mike was named NewYork’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year®, and together they were ranked No. 1 on Business Insider’s Silicon Alley 100, received the Cycle for Survival Game Changer Award for their leadership in helping to raise $375 million for cancer research and were recognized with the Leader of the Future Award from the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute. Mike and Kass live in New York City and the Hudson Valley and have three grown children (Myles, Cole, and Vivian) and two rescue dogs (Cece and Gizmo).
Check out www.kassandmike.com to learn more about the book they are launching in March 2025 at SXSW: Shoveling $h!t: A Love Story.

Cindy, a graduate of Stanford University, is an expert in the college admission process: she got her start in admission offices before opening a private study skills and college counseling business in Southern California, which she ran for over fifteen years. As an Assistant Director of Admission for the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago, she screened and reviewed over three thousand applications, interviewed prospective students, and served on the admission committee to evaluate borderline applicants and appeals cases. Then, as a private counselor, she helped hundreds of high school students navigate their academic journeys, including course selection, study skills, time management, and college applications. Since closing her private educational practice in 2011, Cindy has focused on public speaking to student, parent, school and business groups on a variety of education-related topics.
Over the course of her career, Cindy has written numerous books: The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen’s Wellness and Academic Journey in Today’s Competitive World (Familius/Workman/Hachette, 2020), The Best College Admission Essays (co-author, ARCO/Peterson’s, 1997), The Everything Guide to Study Skills: Strategies, Tips, and Tools You Need to Succeed in School (Simon& Schuster, 2011), Straight-A Study Skills (co-author, Simon& Schuster, 2012), The Everything College Checklist Book (Simon& Schuster, 2013), Writing Successful College Applications: It’s More than Just the Essay (Peterson’s Publishing, 2014), and four other books (Simon & Schuster and Penguin Random House). Her essays have appeared on Zibby Owens’ Zibby Magazine, Your Teen Magazine, College Confidential, Raising Teens Today, The Los Angeles Times, and The Mom Experience, among others. C is for Construction is her eleventh book and first children’s book.
